Best Hidden Trails in Tuscany

Etruscan paths, holy springs and abbey ruins between the famous hill towns.

Skip the Chianti tour buses. Tuscany rewards the walker — sunken Etruscan roads cut into tufa, abandoned abbeys still ringing with bees, and woodland springs the local farmers still drink from. Best in May and September.

#1

Vie Cave of Pitigliano

Hidden Trail

Etruscan paths sunk twenty metres into the rock. Cool even at midday in July.

#2

Abbazia San Galgano

Ruin

Roofless Cistercian abbey with the sword in the stone above it. Sunset is the right time.

#3

Bagno Vignoni hot springs

Spring

Steaming Renaissance bathing square. Walk in free; the medieval pools downstream are even better.

#4

Via Francigena (San Quirico stretch)

Pilgrimage

Medieval pilgrim road from Canterbury to Rome. The Val d'Orcia section is the postcard one.

#5

Oak of the Witches, Capannori

Ancient Tree

600-year-old holm oak with a perfect umbrella crown. Folklore says witches met under it.
